Dr. Lim Boon Keng was a Chinese physician who promoted
social and educational reforms in Singapore in the early 20th century. Lim was a Peranakan descent, with ancestry from Fujian, China.
Lim was later enrolled into Raffles Institution. In
1887, Lim became the first Malayan to receive a Queen's scholarship , and entered Edinburgh University. He graduated in 1892 with a
first class honours degree in medicine.
In 1930, the Japanese occupation took place. There is a tradition in the Chinese culture stating that children would travel to china to study. Back then, it was really hard for the Chinese to travel as it was the Japanese occupation.
The Chinese
decided to set up another Chinese school in Singapore as the Chinese High
School in Singapore was too small to fit the Chinese into it. They name the
school after Chiang
Kai-shek as to the Chinese, he was a war hero as he defeated the Japanese. The
school was first named as Chiang Kai-Shek High School (中正中学),and
was later named as Chung Cheng High School.
Three people,
including Lim Boon Keng, sent a telegram to China, requesting them to approve
on Chung Cheng high school. On 1939 January, the first gathering for the school
committee was organized. On April 30 that year, the school had its first anniversary.
